Ready to help build the best VW Bay Window Buses on the planet?

We’d love to hear about why you might be the right fit to join our team!
Read the job description, and tell us about yourself using the form below.

At The Modern Bay Company, we take iconic 1968–1979 Volkswagen Bay Window Buses and transform them into reliable, adventure-ready, vintage-modern machines through world-class restoration and Subaru powertrain conversions.

Our mission is simple: keep these beloved buses on the road, powering unforgettable adventures across United States, Canada, and beyond.

We are a small but mighty team of builders and problem-solvers. We care deeply about the people we work alongside, about our clients, and through excellent craftsmanship and hard work, creating something genuinely meaningful. Every bus that leaves our shop is a rolling piece of art, engineering, and opportunity for family adventure.

If the phrase “beautifully restored, meticulously engineered, and ready to drive to Alaska tomorrow” makes you grin, keep reading.

The Opportunity

This is not a job where you tighten lug nuts all day.

This is a coveted opportunity to join a highly specialized restoration shop producing some of the finest Subaru-powered Bay Window Buses in the world.

One day you may be rebuilding suspension and brakes. The next, fabricating a custom bracket, blasting and powder coating engine parts, fixing electrical problems, or turning the key for the first time on a freshly-installed Modern Bay Co Drivetrain and hearing it roar to life for the first time.

If you love variety, solving problems, and constantly learning new skills, you will thrive here.

If you prefer to be spoon-fed each job, like doing the same repetitive tasks every day, and are just looking for a place to clock in and clock out, this isn’t your jam.

What You’ll Work On

  • Drivetrain builds & installations
  • Steering, brakes, and suspension restoration work
  • Electrical wiring and engine management wiring conversions
  • Custom fabrication and metalwork (design/cut/grind/weld items such as hitch assemblies, engine hangers, a bit of everything in between
  • Media blasting and powder coating parts as needed
  • Fuel systems
  • Cooling systems
  • Final assembly and detailed quality control

In short: everything except paint and body.

Who We’re Looking For

Ideal Candidate

  • Meticulous. Highly detail oriented. People person with an internal drive to GET IT DONE.
  • Graduate of an automotive restoration or automotive technology program a plus
  • Entry-level candidates straight out of tech school encouraged to apply; open to experienced candidates as well
  • Strong mechanical aptitude, no ego, and a genuine desire to learn
  • Positive, wholesome attitude and strong work ethic desired
  • Comfortable admitting mistakes and learning from them
  • Takes personal pride in producing exceptional work – even when no one may ever see it.
  • Able to think critically and solve problems independently and as part of a team.

Bonus Points

  • Familiarity with vintage VW and/or modern Subaru vehicles. Or both!
  • You’ve restored your own vintage or antique ride(s). You’re into it; not just looking for a 9-5.
  • Experience with vintage vehicles (ie, you can extract that rusted, sheared off bolt one way or another!)
  • Fabrication & basic welding ability
  • Electrical experience (you can make quality splices, generally understand how electrical circuits work)
  • Powder coating or media blasting experience

Our Culture

We believe:

  • Attitude matters.

  • Own your mistakes.
  • Ask questions.
  • Help your teammates.
  • Quality matters.
  • Integrity matters.

We work hard, laugh often, solve problems together, and take enormous pride in what we build.

We’re not assembling appliances. We’re bringing beloved vehicles back to life and helping families create memories that will last for generations.

Also, there is a decent chance you’ll spend your days surrounded by a gaggle of vintage VW buses, good music, and the occasional phrase: “Why do these wires just go nowhere?”

Compensation & Growth

  • Competitive pay based on experience and capability
  • Significant opportunity for growth
  • Exposure to every aspect of high-end automotive restoration
  • Work alongside a passionate, highly skilled team
  • Build a career in a unique and respected niche of the automotive world

Why This Job Matters

Every bus we build carries families to mountain passes, national parks, surf breaks, and cross-country adventures.

We are not just restoring vehicles.

We are helping people reconnect with the open road and create unforgettable memories in machines they love.

And we are doing it one beautifully engineered bus at a time.
